Windows 8.1 Denim comes out of the box. This will be upgradeable for
free to Windows 10 when that launches – the latest we’ve heard is the
end of July, but that could change.
This OS packs Cortana – Microsoft’s personal assistant – and Office 365, which usually costs £60 per year.
You get Live Tiles on the home page too, so you can see info from apps at-a-glance without opening them (like the weather, say).
It also always shows the time on the screen in dimly-lit numbers; this is known as Glance Screen.
The upshot is that you don’t have to unlock the phone, saving you time and battery power.
The Lumia 640 is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip clocked at 1.2GHz, along with 1GB of RAM.
That’s the same processor as in its predecessor (and in the lower-specced Lumia 435), albeit with double the RAM.
Lumia Camera is the default camera app, used for both the 8-megapixel rear snapper and 0.9-megapixel front-facer.
The 5-inch screen is half an inch bigger than the Lumia 635’s, and has a resolution of 1,280x720 pixels.
It makes a big difference – coupled with the slimmer profile, it makes the handset appear much pricier than it is. Which is always welcome.
The successor to the Lumia 635 has a bigger, HD screen, better camera and slightly slimmer body. All of which puts it head and shoulders above its predecessor.
Whether it's enough to leapfrog the competition, however, is a different matter…
The 640 is a full millimetre slimmer than the 635. That might not sound a lot, but it makes a big difference.
It’s not exactly iPhone-slim, but at this price – £120 SIM free – it doesn’t have to be.
It’s well put together and inconspicuous in the pocket. And that’s good enough for us.
Our test unit had the matte black finish. While not as shiny as the glossy cyan, white or orange versions, it’s a lot less slippery.
The back pops off easily too, so you can swap colours as often as you change your socks.
That works out at a difference of £336 over the course of a two-year contract. A not inconsiderable sum by anyone’s measure, right?
So what to read into this?
Well, at first sight those healthy, swelling S6 Edge sales appear to indicate substantial pent-up demand for phones with fresh form factors.
That ties in with consumers’ concomitant waning interest in new smartphones with disappointingly familiar features that don’t offer a compelling reason to upgrade – a phenomenon we’ve dubbed ‘handset fatigue’.
But that’d perhaps be a somewhat hasty conclusion to draw. Right now, anyway.
That’s because it’s also possible that the early adopters who are buying the S6 Edge at the moment are generally more inclined to want a handset that stands out from the crowd and are prepared to pay a premium to ensure they get it before the rank and file.

If you want the Galaxy S6 on a free-phone deal, though, you’re looking at minimum outlay of £34.50 per month.

EE is looking to snare more customers and ensure it doesn’t haemorrhage old ones with a savvy new offer: a free portable charger.Dubbed the EE Power Bar, it’s available to all of the network’s customers and will hold enough juice for a full phone charge.
What’s more, if the Power Bar itself dies and you’re near an EE shop, you can go in and swap it for a fully charged one without having to pay.
There are, of course, caveats. Pay as you go customers need to have been with EE for three months in order to qualify and you’ll need to send a text to activate the device, which will cost 35p.
However, phone and broadband customers are eligible, so those aren’t exactly the worst hurdles to clear.
The move comes as EE is in the process of being bought out by BT.
The network is also facing up the impending challenge of a merged Three and O2 network, meaning it’s going to need to try doubly hard to win over consumers.

Those buying Apple Watch Edition models will not be affected, with supplies of luxury version of the watch seemingly unaffected.
It appears that only 42mm models are being hit, with the smaller model not hampered.
Apple is said to be sending some orders out early, however, with anecdotal evidence suggesting it is going some way to fixing its supply issues.
Earlier this week, Tim Cook said the company was looking to improve supplies after it appeared to sell out following the start of pre-orders on April 10th.
The story comes as rumours emerged that Apple had to ditch a number of completed watch units after faults were found in the device's Taptic Engine. Motors made at a plant in Shezhen were said to be to blame.
Apple is thought to be bringing a new assembly plant online to deal with demand. Analysts believe 2.3 million Apple Watches were sold in its opening weekend alone.

That means it once again features rear-mounted volume buttons and a power key. And It’s got the same size screen at 5.5-inches.
But this time it’s a 2560x1440 QHD number and is purportedly 25% brighter and renders colours more accurately.
There’s also a slight curve to the display, which apparently makes it 20% more resistant to smashes.
However, it’s not the sort of thing you’d notice at a glance and nothing like as attention-grabbing as the Galaxy Edge’s dual sloping screens.
Elsewhere, the camera has been upgraded to 16 megapixels. Other tweaks are better image stabilisation, a f 1/8 lens that lets in more light, better performance in low light conditions and better colour reproduction.
In news that is likely to polarise buyers, though, the G4 is made from plastic, with the option of a leather rear panel. Given the move towards more premium materials on other flagship phones, this seems something of a curious move on LG’s part.

Two of the most highly anticipated smartphones have been benchmarked.
And if processing speed and zipping through screens is what floats your
boat, it looks like you're in for a treat.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge notched up a record score on the AnTuTu benchmark test, while the Sony Xperia Z4 had all sorts of specs confirmed.

The S6 Edge hit 60,978, which is an all-time high-score for the benchmark suite, suggesting Samsung has heeded complaints that the Galaxy S5 was a somewhat disappointing update and has really beefed up the spec sheet this time around.
The test revealed the device uses the octa-core Exynos 7420, which is Samsung's custom-built chip set.
Also on the cards are a 5.1-inch display with a resolution of 1,440x2,560 pixels, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage. Plus a 20-megapixel camera and 5-megapixel front-facer.
The Galaxy S6 is expected to come in as many as five different versions. It's not known whether the innards will vary, or if the differences are purely cosmetic.
The Xperia Z4 popped up on Geekbench. It looks to be running Android 5.0 Lollipop (no surprises there), with an octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor clocked at 1.55GHz, and 3GB of RAM.

Since then we've had nothing wearable from the House of Moto. But that's about to change soon, according to Magnus Ahlqvist, Corporate Vice President, EMEA & APAC, at Motorola.
Asked if plans are afoot for more wearables this year, he said: "Yes. I can't comment on which ones, but we have.
"We have some interesting things coming in the coming quarters."
He explained: "If you looked at what we have done in the last 6/12 months, in terms of the Moto 360 and Moto Hint.
"The most fundamental thing we asked ourselves: what do people really look for in a smartwatch. Our thinking was, what they are really looking for is a watch - a good-looking timepiece.
"We then integrated a lot of technology, to make sure it was adding quite a lot to value from a technical perspective."
